If by some reason you are unable to view the video that I referred to in my previous post (a house wren throwing just-hatched bluebirds out of the hole) that's on the sialis.org website, you can watch it on YouTube at

Handful 'o Chickadees, May 3rd, 2009
I tried to use my mirror and flashlight to see the chickadee nestlings but it just wasn't working. I also wanted to count them so I quickly scooped them up, took a quick pic, and put them right back in the nest. All 4 are growing and healthy. Their eyes are not open yet but their wing feathers are in pin. They also are showing contour feathers. I guess that makes them about 4 or 5 days old. I compared this photo to a site with day-by-day photos of chickadees. Check it out at:

While I was by the chickadee box, the TWO (yes, I said 2) House Wrens were calling to each other/taunting me. The fact that there are 2 of them makes me think that the male has already paired up with a female and may be content to continue the nest it's started in one of the other boxes. Time will tell.
I can live in hope, can't I??
